The author lived in Brisbane for a number of years where he was a lecturer in botany and a member of the Royal Society. He travelled widely in Australia and the book is largely based on his own observations and research. The book inlcudes chapters on geology, climate, topography, botany and zoology and a long chapter on the Aborignies (pp. 262-311). Lauterer also published two scientific articles on Aboriginal languages.
