When the Novara reached Auckland in December 1858, Hochstetter undertook geological surveys at the request of the government. He was to remain in New Zealand for 9 months and on his return to Austria spent the next 10 years working on the collections made during the Novara voyage, including the official geologiy report. His 'Neu-Seeland' is the first major work on New Zealand in the German language. The delightful coloured steel engravings were done after original watercolous by New Zealand explorer and artist Charles Heaohy (1820 - 1881, Brisbane). An English translation was published in 1867, omitting some of the chapters of this original German edition. Bibliography: Hocken, p. 224. Howgego III, pp. 266-267. $2750.00AUD
