GRUNENBERG, ARTHUR and GIESEKE, ALBERT

02401 Arts Management Australia [Weise] Melbourne [Berlin] 1977 [1920]. Folio. 12 plates in a portfolio (of which 5 are coloured - contrary to the title), 2 pages of text on the back of the wrapper, in stiff illustrated boards. Minimal creasing to a few plates, else in very good condition. * A facsimile of the very rare original 1920 Berlin edition, commissioned of Arthur Grunenberg by Anna Pavlova in 1920. In his preface to the German edition of Pavlova's autobiography "Tanzende Fsse" (Dresden 1925), Grunenberg recalls first seeing Pavlova in 1913, and entranced by her dancing he made several drawings of her. Grunenberg had earlier published a series of 7 lithographs with the title "Russisches Ballet" as well as a further 16 dance scenes under the title "Figuren". * 1000 copies of this facsimile edition were done by Arts Management Australia in Melbourne. This is an unnumbered copy without the accompanying translation of the introduction (but with a photocopy of the translation from the NLA copy). * Only 2 copies of the original 1920 edition are known to exist. One belonged to the dancer, dance scholar, collector and bibliographer Friderica Derra de Moroda. Her copy is listed in her bibliography as number 1163 having 3 hand-coloured plates and is further described as copy No. V of a limited edition. Together with her vast collection of dance manuscripts and memorabilia, it is now in the University of Salzburg, Austria. * The only other known copy is in the Performing Arts Museum in Melbourne with 5 hand-coloured plates. This facsimile edition was done from the PAM copy. Very scarce. $800.00AUD
